Chiropractic Care for Desk Workers, Athletes and Moms

At Askeland Chiropractic in North Raleigh, Dr. Askeland and Dr. Lintz help people get their pain under control and stay that way. Whether you sit at a desk all day, play sports on the weekends or are caring for a baby or toddler, our goal is the same: treatment paired with education. Call (919) 841-0081 to book.

Desk workers

Long hours at a desk can leave you with upper back pain, neck pain, headaches, hip pain and pain in the front of the shoulder.

  • Move often. Try to break up desk sitting about every 30 minutes with 2 to 5 minutes of walking or other comfortable movement. No single posture is the problem. Staying in the same position all day can be.
  • Don't chase a perfect rule. Researchers have found short walking breaks improve short-term blood sugar and blood pressure responses, but there's no proven universal maximum safe sitting time.
  • Stay active overall. Aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity per week, plus strengthening exercise at least twice a week.
  • Set up your workspace well. Ergonomics matter, and we can help you adjust your desk, chair and screen.
  • Get a plan for your pain. See our Neck Pain, Back Pain and Headaches pages.

Weekend warriors and athletes

Pickleball, golf, running, weight lifting, soccer, baseball and tennis all put repeated stress on the same muscles and joints. We commonly see:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Patellar tendinitis (knee)
  • Plantar fasciitis (heel and foot)
  • Biceps tendinitis (shoulder)
  • Muscle spasms
  • Neck pain with nerve irritation ("pinched nerves")
  • Back pain

What we recommend

  • A plan matched to you. We examine you, find what's driving the pain and build care around your sport and goals. See our Sports Injuries page.
  • Rest and recovery. Recovery is part of training, and we'll help you work out how much rest your injury needs.
  • Nutrition support. Depending on your needs, we may talk with you about supplements such as creatine, electrolytes, omega-3, magnesium, amongst others. What's right for you depends on your health, your medications and your training.

Pregnant women, moms and caregivers

Caring for a baby or toddler is physically demanding, and pregnancy changes how your body carries load.

  • During pregnancy: hip pain and low back pain
  • New moms and caregivers: upper back and neck pain from feeding and from picking up babies and toddlers

How we help

  • Get the pain under control. We use treatment modalities appropriate for you and your stage of life.
  • Keep it away. We pair treatment with practical at-home advice so you can maintain your progress and avoid re-irritating the problem. See our Back Pain and Neck Pain pages.

Common questions

Is it safe to get adjusted while pregnant?

Many pregnant patients receive chiropractic care, and pregnancy is not a reason to avoid it. Every patient is assessed first. We start with a history and exam to rule out red flags and decide which technique fits you best at your stage of pregnancy, and we work with your OB or midwife when needed.

How long will it take, or how long until I can return to play?

It depends on your diagnosis, how long the problem has been there and what your sport or daily life demands of your body. After your exam we'll give you a realistic estimate, re-check your progress regularly and adjust your plan. We'll tell you when it's appropriate to return to activity.

How do I prevent this from happening again?

Treatment paired with education is our goal for every patient. Once your pain is under control, we'll give you at-home advice to maintain your progress and avoid re-irritating the problem. That can include movement breaks for desk workers, rest and recovery for athletes, and advice on feeding and lifting for new moms and caregivers.
